Getting chlorine out of the water can be difficult. And keeping it that way requires proper maintenance.
Janis Petrini, a pool and spa cleaning expert, is among the people fighting against some of the dangers of chlorine exposure. She has more than 25 years experience in the industry.
Petrini owns her own business, which services luxury and resort pools around the country.
She often says the best thing people can do for their pool is to clean it properly.
“The biggest mistake people make is just letting their pool go,” Petrini said.
For instance, she showed us the problem with a 40-year-old pool: a cracked skimmer basket. She’s trying to fix it right away.
“If you can’t get the basket, you can use any free floating float,” Petrini said. “And then we can pull up the skimmer basket and that’s what we’re going to do.”

After a long day of swimming, spas and steam rooms, it’s time to clean the swimming pool.
“We all know that cleaning the pool in summer is the worst thing that we can do,” said Mark Boughton, the vice president of sales for Pool Corporation, a professional cleaning company.
In his company’s nine years of maintenance, he said, he has never been able to find a good cleaning solution.
“The reason I know we haven’t solved the pool cleaning problem is because we work on pools every day. We’re cleaning pools and we’re getting a bad idea every day,” he said. “You can’t find a product out there that will fix it.”
The fact that there is not one great product that will make swimming pools and spas sparkle is why Boughton and other experts say many people opt to take the safe route and hire a professional.
